Phil started playing piano at age 6, violin at 8 and organ at 11 studying with, amongst others, Nicholas Danby, Dr. Francis Jackson CBE and Sheila Lawrence. He gained the ABRSM’s Amy Mills Robertson prize for piano.
At 18, Phil went to Glasgow to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama under John Turner, Lawrence Glover and Miles Coverdale, gaining a B.A. (Mus. Perf.).
Since leaving college, Phil has been enjoying a diverse career, spanning more than 20 years so far, during which his varied talents have kept him in demand as a keyboard player & programmer, musical director & conductor, accompanist & repetiteur, recording producer, composer & arranger.
In addition to working extensively in musical theatre for companies such as Cameron Macintosh Ltd., Really Useful Group and Working Title, he has played for household names, including Sir Cliff Richard, Brian May CBE and Elaine Page OBE along with well-known orchestras, including the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Bournemouth Symphony. Phil has recorded for various labels and written music for TV.
Phil is passionate about passing on the knowledge that he has gained to others and has been teaching piano and musical theory now for over twenty years. His vast amount of practical experience working at the highest calibre enables him to communicate in an enthusiastic and accessible way, easily grasped by students of all ages and abilities, enabling them to progress well and achieve outstanding results, including in exams at all levels if that is their desire
Phil offers fun and friendly private lessons in piano and music theory to all ages and abilities. Anyone can learn. He has a high quality large grand piano for students to enjoy learning on.
